Neuromodulation & Spinal Cord Stimulation Expert Witness
Independent, consultant-authored medico-legal reports on neuromodulation, spinal cord stimulation, and intrathecal drug delivery (ITDD), prepared to CPR Part 35 standard for claimant, defendant, and Single Joint Expert instructions.
Cases involving implanted pain-management devices – spinal cord stimulation, intrathecal drug delivery, and related neuromodulation techniques – require a consultant who understands both the clinical indications and the litigation questions device-related cases raise: appropriateness of implantation, complication management, and long-term efficacy. Our faculty includes consultants experienced in neuromodulation.
What sets a neuromodulation instruction apart
Neuromodulation has become a specialty in its own right
Device-related cases raise questions a generalist chronic pain report may not be equipped to address:
- Whether SCS or intrathecal drug delivery was an appropriate treatment choice, and whether patient selection followed accepted practice
- Assessment of device-related complications — lead migration, infection, hardware failure — and their bearing on causation and prognosis
- Evaluation of reported efficacy and functional outcome following implantation
- Standard of care in implantation, programming, or post-implant management, where clinical negligence is alleged
- Distinguishing device-related pain presentations from the underlying condition the device was implanted to treat
A report that treats a neuromodulation case as generic chronic pain might miss the questions the case actually turns on. Ours don’t.
- Appropriateness of implantation and patient selection
- Device-related complications and their clinical and legal significance
- Condition and prognosis following implantation, including efficacy assessment
- Standard of care in implantation, programming, and follow-up management
- Biopsychosocial evaluation, including the psychological and psychosocial factors bearing on patient selection, outcome, and adjustment to the device
- Functional impact and its bearing on quantum, including the significance of psychological and psychosocial factors
Instruction types
Instructed across claimant, defendant, and SJE work, our neuromodulation-experienced consultants accept instructions across:
- Personal Injury - condition and prognosis where SCS or intrathecal delivery forms part of a claimant's treatment history
- Clinical Negligence - standard of care in implantation, device management, and complication handling
- Single Joint Expert instructions
- Claimant and defendant instructions
All experts act independently and in accordance with CPR Part 35 and GMC guidance.
