Dr Sawyer was a Consultant in Anaesthetics and Pain Management at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust from 2002 to 2013, and has been a Consultant in Anaesthetics and Pain Management at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust since 2013.

He has extensive experience in the management of a wide range of chronic painful conditions, including those that may result in personal injury. This experience includes clinical problems such as mechanical low back pain, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), chronic pain syndromes, neuropathic pain, thoracic spinal pain, cervical pain and whiplash, shoulder pain, chronic pelvic pain, chronic pain after surgery and trauma, and complex opioid drug management cases. Dr Sawyer also has an interest in functional neurological disorders and how psychological factors can influence chronic pain conditions.
In 2019, Dr Sawyer completed a Masters in Medical Law degree, which was conferred with merit, and he is currently an examiner for the Faculty Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
Dr Sawyer is an established medical expert who has been providing medicolegal reports for the courts since 2004. He joined Pain Expert in 2014.
